Referral criteria

We assess patients who have a mixture of psychiatric and/or neurological conditions which require specialized diagnostic, investigational and recommendations regarding treatment. We are unable to provide ongoing treatment to the majority of referrals and will generally refer people back to their treating team or specialist.

Your patient may be referred to our service for:

  • Differentiating severe mental illness from ‘organic disorders’ / neurological causes
  • Younger onset dementia / rare/ atypical dementias
  • Movement disorders either primary (Huntington’s Disease or predictive Huntington’s Disease) or secondary (medication related)
  • Neurogenetic assessments in conjunction with Neurogenetics Royal Melbourne Hospital
  • Metabolic Neuropsychiatry eg Inborn metabolic disorders with psychiatric sequelae (Niemann Pick Type C, PKU)
  • Neuropsychiatric assessment in people with neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy)
  • Deep Brain Stimulation for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • ECT: where the provision of ECT requires care in a tertiary medical hospital
  • Other neuropsychiatric presentation (schizophrenia with movement disorder, vasculitis, organic psychiatric disorder, neurometabolic disorder)

We are unable to accept referrals for:

  • The assessment or diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder / autism spectrum disorders /intellectual disability
  • Treatment of: primary psychiatric disorders, behavioural disturbance in intellectual disability or functional neurological disorders

Please note: Referrals will not be accepted if another service is felt to be more appropriate (such as a private psychiatrist, brain injury service, intellectual disability services etc.) or if the request is solely for neuropsychology assessment. We will endeavour to provide referrers with alternative referral options if we cannot accept the referral. You may find a link here to a comprehensive list of publicly available neuropsychology services
